Levels of Structural Organization Flashcards
Chemical Level
This very basic level can be compared to the letters of the alphabet and includes atoms (carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, and sulfur), the smallest unit of matter that participate in chemical reactions, and molecules (deoxyribonucleic acid and glucose), two or more atoms joined together.
Cellular Level
Molecules combine to form cells, the basic structural and functional units of an organism that are composed of chemicals.
Tissue Level
Tissues are groups of cells and the materials surrounding them that work together to perform a particular function, similar to the way words are put together to form sentences

Organ Level
At the organ level, different types of tissues are joined together. Similar to the relationship between sentences and paragraphs, organs are structures that are composed of two or more different types of tissues.
System Level
A system consists of related organs with a common function.
Organismal Level
All the parts of the human body functioning together constitute the total organism.
Noninvasive Diagnostic Techniques
A technique that does not involve insertion of an instrument or device through the skin or a body opening

Palpation
a method of feeling with the fingers or hands during a physical examination.
Auscultation
the action of listening to sounds from the heart, lungs, or other organs, typically with a stethoscope, as a part of medical diagnosis.
Percussion
a method of tapping body parts with fingers, hands, or small instruments as part of a physical examination.
