Levels of Organizations Flashcards
Oral Exam
What are the levels of organizations?
- the chemical levels
- the cellular levels
- the tissue levels
- The organ levels
- The system levels
- The Organism level
The definition and some examples of chemical level
the smallest and simplest level within the structural hierarchy, includes the tiniest building blocks of matter; Atoms and its combined form molecules.
- Atoms: the simplest units of matterEssential atoms- Carbon (C), Hydrogen (H), Oxygen (O), nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), Calcium (Ca) and Sulfur (S)
- Molecules: two or more atoms joined togethere.g.) Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA), glucose, proteins
The definition and some examples of Cellular levels
made up of the smallest unit of living matter; the cells
-
Cells: the basic structural and functional units of an organismMain parts of the cells- Cell membrane, Cytoplasm, Organelles, NucleusExamples)
- myocyte (muscle cells)
- nerve cells (nerurocyte)
- sperm cells (spermatocyte)
The definition and some examples of Tissue levels
Definition : Groups of similar cells that have a common function (must contain two different cells)
-
4 basic types of cells / Example
- Epithelial tissues - covers surfaces and lining internal organs (skins, lining of intestine)
- Connective tissues - supports and binds structures (Bone, blood, adipose tissue, ligament)
- Muscle tissues - contracts to cause movement (skeletal, cardiac, smooth muscles)
- Nerve tissues - transmits signals
The definition and some examples of Organ levels
Definition: Composed of two or more tissues to form an organ that perform a specific function within a body.
Examples:
- Heart (pumps blood)
- Lungs (gas exchange)
- Stomach(Composed of Smooth muscle tissues, Connective tissues, nerves and epithelial tissues)
- Muscle (like the biceps brachii, made up of muscle tissue, connective tissue, blood vessels, nerves)
The definition and some examples of System levels
Definition: Groups of organs that work together to perform complex body functions.
Example - There are 11 systems
- Cardiovascular System - Consists of heart, blood vessels to circulate blood through out body to provide nutrients and oxygen
- Integumentary
- Muscular
- Skeletal
- Nervous
- Endocrine
- Lymphatic
- Respiratory
- Digestive
- Urinary
- Reproductive
The definition and some examples of Organism levels
Definition:
highest level of organization
Sum total of all structural level working together
Example: human being
