Levels of Organization/Anatomy Flashcards
What is level One
Cells
What does it mean that cells have a division of labor?
work of keeping the organism alive is divided among the different parts of the body, each part has a specific job
What is level 2?
Tissue
What is tissue?
Cells that are similar in structure and function joined together
What is level 3
Organs
What are organs?
Tissues that are grouped together and work together
What kind of tissue makes up the heart
muscle, blood and nerve
What is level 4
Organ systems
What is an organ system
Organs that cooperate with one another to perform a specific function
What is level 5?
Organisms
What is an organism
an entire living thing that carries out all the basic life functions
Is there a smaller unit of organization than cells?
Yes, because there are things inside cells
Why is the cell considered the first level of organization?
1) because cells are the smallest out of the five levels (2) you can only see it under a microscope and (3) cells help work the other levels of organization
what type of cells join together to form tissues?
bone and blood
List all of the organs you are familiar with in the body
heart, stomach, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, appendix, liver, pancreas
what is the order of levels of organization within humans?
cells-tissues-organs-organ system-organism
what are the 4 types of tissues?
muscle, nerve, connective, and epithelial
Define muscle tissue
it is formed of muscles and can contract or shorten causing your body to move,
3 kinds of muscle tissue
cardiac, smooth, skeletal
define nerve tissue
carries messages back and forth between the brain and every other part of your body. In brain cells and tissue
What is connective tissue
provides support for your body and connects all of its parts, ex. tendons, ligaments and cartilage
what is epithelial tissue
it covers the surfaces of the body both inside an out (skin, lining of digestive system, inside of cheeks
what is the special way we remember the 11 organ systems?
DR. I.E. MCSNIRE
Which body system is responsible for helping organisms make copies of themselves
reproductive
lungs, mouth, throat, and nose are all part of what system
respiratory
which body system protects from disease
immune
which body system protects the body and helps keep water inside/regulate temperature?
integumentary (skin)
which two body systems work together to bring oxygen to the cells?
circulatory (blood) and respiratory (breathing)
what system is responsible for keeping the heart beating
muscular
system helps take food in and break it down
digestive
system that removes waste
excretory
system that supports the body, protects it and works with muscles to move
skeletal
what system controls the body processes with chemicals/hormones such as the intake of sugar by cells?
endocrine
What does DR. I.E. MCSNIRE stand for
digestive respiratory integumentary endocrine muscular circulatory skeletal nervous immune reproductive excretory
