Levels Of Organization Flashcards
Prokaryotic
Do not contain a nucleus or any other membrane-bound organelle.
Eukaryotic
An organism whose cells contain a nucleus.
Unicellular
A certain algae, spores, consisting of a single cell.
Multicellular
Having consisting of many cells.
Autotrophic
An organism capable of synthesizing its own food from inorganic.
Heterotrophic
an organism that cannot manufacture its own food by carbon fixation and therefore derives its intake of nutrition from other sources.
Sexual Reproduction
the production of new living organisms by combining genetic information from two individuals of different types of sexes.
Asexual
which offspring arise from a single organism, and inherit the genes of that parent only; it does not involve the fusion of gametes, and almost never changes the number of chromosomes.
Stimuli
a thing or event that evokes a specific functional reaction in an organ or tissue.
Homeostasis
the tendency toward a relatively stable equilibrium between interdependent elements, especially as maintained by physiological processes.
Classification
the action or process of classifying something according to shared qualities or characteristics.
Cell
the smallest structural and functional unit of an organism.
Tissue
any of the distinct types of material of which animals or plants are made, consisting of specialized cells and their products.
Organ
a part of an organism that is typically self-contained and has a specific vital function, such as the heart or liver in humans.
Organ system
a group of organs that work together as a biological system to perform one or more functions.
