Levels Of Organization Flashcards
9 levels name in order
- Atom
- molecule
- macromolecule
- organelle
- cell
- tissue
- organ
- system
- organism
Atom
- elements fundamental building blocks of matter
- the diff is not matter but organization
- KEY atoms Carbon,Oxygen,Hydrogen,Nitrogen
Molecules
- 2 or more atoms bonded together, all molecules r combo of atoms
- molecules have energy content as well as matter
- all complex systems come apart unless energy is continually put in
Macromolecules
-a function of living organisms:
Require energy to build and maintain
R complex and short lived
Look at anything large, complex highly organized-it energetically comes led, takes energy to maintain complex systems are unstable
Examples of macromolecules
Carbohydrates-calorically rewarding part of cell membranes, cellular glues
Lipids-cell membranes fuel, padding, insulation(heat and electrical) steroid hormones
Nucleus acids-information molecules:DNA &RNA
Protein -can be structural (collagen)and functional (cell machines -enzymes ,transporters)
Cell
Basic living unit
Many organisms are single cells
Tissue
2 or more cells that are associated and carry out a common function
- going groups of similar cells, same embryological origin perform specialized function
- cells can be one organism or part of a tissue
- if in cellular organisms-1cell has to do everything
-some organisms live at just tissue level no organs ex.jellyfish and sponge
A.tissue
4 types
- epithelial -lining covering glands
- connective-hold things together -major part of anatomy
- muscle-contractile tissue
- nerve-communication
Organs-
2 or more tissue working together , have recognizable shapes and specific functions
-many have all 4 tissue types
Ex.worms live at this level :heart w/ open circularly system
Systems
2 or more organs working together to do a job
-11 organ systems
