Levels Of Organisation Flashcards
What does the nucleus do ??
It is an organelle which contains the genetic material that controls the cells activities
It is surrounded by its own membrane
What does cell membrane do ??
The membrane forms the outer surface of the cell and controls the substances that go in and out
What does cytoplasm do ??
A gel like substance where most of the cells chemical reactions happen
It contains enzymes which control these reactions
What does mitochondria do ??
Small organelles where most of the reactions for aerobic respiration takes place
*Respiration transfers energy that the cell needs to work
What are ribosomes ??
Small organelles where proteins are made in a cell
What are chloroplasts ??
Where photosynthesis takes place this makes food for the plant. Chloroplasts contain a green substance called chlorophyll which is used in photosynthesis
What is a cell wall
A rigid structure made of cellulose which surrounds the cell membrane. It supports the cell and strengthens it
What is a vacuole ??
A large organelle that contains cell sap it helps support the cell
- cell sap is a weak solution of sugars and salts
What does a typical animal cell contain ??
Nucleus Cell membrane Cytoplasm Mitochondria Ribosomes
What does a typical plant cell contain ??
Nucleus Cell membrane Cytoplasm Mitochondria Ribosomes Chloroplasts Cell wall Vacuole
Similar cells are organised into what
TISSUES !!
Define a tissue
A group of similar cells that work together to carry out a particular function
What is xylem tissue
Plants have it !
They need this tissue and it transports water and mineral salts
What is phloem tissue ??
It is in plants !!!!
It is for transporting sucrose and amino acids
Tissues are organised into what ?
ORGANSSSS
Define the term organ ??
An organ is a group of different tissues that work together to perform a function
Organs make up what ??
An organ systems
Define organ systems
Organs work together to form organ systems. Each systems does a different job
