level 1 revision Flashcards
functions of nervous system
- detection of change
- food
- danger
- mates
object recognition
identification of stimulus
stimulus localisation
identifying where stimulus comes from
glutamate and its receptors
= excitatory NT involved in EPSP
AMPA
NMDA
GABA and its receptors
= inhibitory NT involved in IPSP
Cl channels → hyperpolarisation
long term depression
activity-dependent reduction in the efficacy of neuronal synapses lasting hours or longer following a long patterned stimulus
long term potentiation
persistent strengthening of synapses that leads to a long-lasting increase in signal transmission between neurons.
action potential propagation
depolarisation = influx of positive ions = less negative
followed by refractory period where ion channels are temporarily inactive
repolarisation phase where normal negatuve potential of membrane is restored (-70mV)
followed by the next depolarisation when a stimulus occurs
