Q

Part L was updated recently, can you please tell me when and what was changed?

A

On June 15 2022 Part L was updated with the mandate to improve the current minimum standard for carbon emissions reduction for new homes by 31% - this was previously just 6%, so the increase is a significant one.

New non-domestic builds need to produce at least 27% less.

U Values need improving - min values for doors, windows, rooflights improved from 1.6 to 1.4

Q

Can you tell me what EPC’s are?

A

Energy performance certificates
tells you how efficient your property is from A to G

First and foremost, the purpose of an EPC is to show the energy efficiency of a building in a clear, transparent and universal way. This means that potential buyers and tenants can see exactly how energy efficient the building is, in turn getting an idea of the property’s energy use and potential costs of living there.

Q

When minimizing the amount of concrete in upper floor/suspended slab constructions, are there any other methods other than say reducing the cement mix content?

Q

What is pre tensioned and post tensioned slabs?

A

In Pre-tensioning, steel wires are tensioned before concrete is placed and hardened.

16
Q

Why is sustainability important in construction?

A
  • Construction has a huge impact on the environment, accounting for around 40% CO2 emissions
  • Hazardous waste arising from construction works can cause pollution, so it’s important to dispose of it appropriately
  • Utilising methods such as lean construction can reduce waste on site
17
Q

Can you name some of the key environmental issues that may be encountered within the construction industry?

A

Sound pollution
Dust pollution
Noise pollution
Use of chemicals
Contaminated ground or water course
Asbestos

18
Q

What is the Paris agreement?

A

A global framework to avoid dangerous climate change; to limit climate change to 1.5 degrees

Under the agreement, each country is obligated to report on their contribution to mitigate climate change

19
Q

What is a U Value?

A

Measures how effective a material is as an insulator
Lower = better

20
Q

How do photovoltaics work?

A

Sunlight strikes PV panels and knocks loose the electrons from the atoms
Positive and negative conductors capture electrons in the form of current
Energy stored in batteries or immediately used
