God’s responses to the Israelites’ obstacles

Why is Jesus referred to as “the second Joshua?”
- Greek translation of Jesus is Joshua.
2. Joshua saved God’s people, led them to the promised land; Jesus saves us from sin and leads us to heaven.
Why did God destroy? (3)
- Result of sin.
- The sin was a threat to the Israelites’ existence.
- Consequence of corporate sin.
Two things to remember from stories where God destroys
- God warns.

Why stories of death and destruction? (4)
- To show the horrible/destructive nature of sin.
- To show the consequences of sin.
- To show the seriousness of sin.
- To show the holiness of God.
How bad were the Canaanites? (2)
- Worship included religious prostitution.

Why did Israel disobey God so much?
They didn’t completely drive out the Canaanites or destroy their places of worship.

Pagan worship.

How did God respond to the Israelites’ cries for help?
He raised up judges to rescue them.

A tribal chief (leader) who led in military and civil matters; protected and delivered God’s people.

Lessons from the book of Judges (3)
- Disobedience leads to more disobedience.
- Evil can look attractive but ends in misery.
- Even though we fall time and again, God will hear our cry and deliver us if we ask.
