Lessons 3 and 4- Parietal and Occipital Lobes Flashcards
What are the main functions of the parietal lobe?
processing and interpreting somatosensory input, spatial awareness
What is the name of the key area of the parietal lobe?
Primary Somatosensory cortex
Where does the primary somatosensory cortex receive information from?
receives and processes sensory information from skin and body (e.g., touch, temperature, pressure, pain)
Does A or B show the primary somatosensory cortex?
B
What are three ways that the primary somatosensory cortex is organised?
- Organised contra-laterally
- Organised so that sensory info from parts higher on the body is processed by the lower parts of the primary somatosensory cortex and vice versa.
- Areas of the body that are more sensitive to touch info have more area of cerebral cortex devoted to them
what is spatial neglect?
the inability of a person to process and perceive stimuli on one side of the body or environment.
what does the term contralateral mean in terms of brain functioning?
Contra= opposite
Lateral = side
Means that the Left hemisphere of the brain is responsible for processing sensory and motor info for the right side of the body, and vice versa.
what is the major function of the occipital lobe?
visual perception, including colour, form and motion.
what is the name of the primary area of the occipital lobe?
primary visual cortex
Information from the right visual field is processed in the ___ occipital lobe.
LEFT
Information from the left visual field is processed in the ___ occipital lobe.
RIGHT
what is aphantasia?
phenomenon in which individuals lack the capacity to generate mental imagery.
what is mental imagery?
the visual representations and experiences of sensory information without the presence of sensory stimuli.
which number points to the parietal lobe?

which number points to the occipital lobe?
