lessons 1-6 Flashcards
what is biology
Biology is the scientific study of life
What is the common feature of living organisms
That they are made of cells
How do cells reproduce
By cell division
Where is DNA stored
In the nucleus of the cell
Why is DNA important?
To created identical copy of the cells every time new cells are created
what is metabolism
a set of chemical reactions in living organisms
what does metabolism do
creates or breaks down molecules, and through this process, energ is transformed from one form into another (eg. food –> chemical energy)
organic molecules
molecules containing carbon that are produced by living organisms (carbohydrates, proteins, lipids)
evolution
process of species change over time
atom
the smallest unit of matter
H= Hydrogen
1 atomic number
C= Carbon
6 atomic number
O= Oxygen
8 atomic number
N= Nitrogen
7 atomic number
atomic number
number of protons
protons
positive
electrons
negative
isotopes
number of nutrients on atoms
why do isotopes have a different mass
because of different numbers of neutrons
electron shell
passage of electrons around the nucleus
inner shell
accommodates 2 electrons
outer shell
8 electrons
atoms that do not form chemical bonds (inert gases)
He, Ne, Ar
molecules are formed by
a combination of atoms
