Windows Deployment Services
Used to deploy operating systems over a network to end devices without a local boot device. Uses image files to deploy an OS to target machine.
Image Files
Snapshots of a system stored in database format with a .WIM file type.
Preboot Execution Environment
Used by client to obtain the image from WDS, uses Windows Preinstallation Environment when booting clients to obtain an image.
Installation and Configuration Steps
- Join server to domain
- Install WDS server role and role services
- Create and configure an active DHCP server
- Ensure there is an active DNS server on the network
- Ensure WDS server has an NTFS partition to store image files
- Configure WDS server in WDS console
- Add images
WDS Server Role
Includes two role services:
Deployment server, Transport server
Configuring DHCP Server
Must have an active scope for the network, must create a PXE option - Data type: string, Code: 060
Create a server option using option 060 with string value of FQDN of the WDS server

Unattended Installs

Managing Offline Images
You can: Install/remove features; Update patches, hotfixes and drivers so when you image a computer it is already up to date. Allows you to update images without creating a custom image with the new updates etc.

Security, Critical, Service Packs
Security Update
Protect against system vulnerability, listed as critical, important, moderate, or low
Critical Update
Solves a critical system issue that does not pose a security risk
Service Packs
A collection of security and critical updates including hotfixes and newly found issues not already released in a single update
