Lesson Three Flashcards
Perfect Square
A number that is the square of a whole number.
Square Root
The square root of a number is another number that when multiplied by itself is equal to the given number.
Example: 5 x 5 = 25, 4 x 4 = 16
Irrational Numbers
Are numbers that cannot be written in the form a/b, where a is any integer and b is any nonzero integer.
Real Numbers
Rational and irrational numbers form the set of real numbers.
Pythagorean Theorem
is an equation that shows the relationship between the legs and the hypotenuse. In a right triangle, the two shortest sides are legs. The longest, which is opposite the right angle, is the hypotenuse.
Coordinate Plane
A grid formed by the intersection of two number lines.
Y-axis
Is a vertical number line.
X-axis
Is a horizontal number line.
Quadrants
The X and Y axes divide the plane into quadrants.
Origin
Represented with “0”, is the point where the axes intersect.
Ordered Pair (x,y)
An ordered pair (x,y) gives the coordinates of the location of a point.
Solution
Any ordered pair that makes an equation true is a solution of the equation.
Linear Equation
An equation is a linear equation if all of its solutions lie on a line.
Transformation
A transformation is a change in the position, shape, or size of a figure.
Translation
A translation is a transformation that moves each point of a figure the same distance and in the same direction.
