A

Henrich Himmler, a long-serving member of the party and had taken part in the Munich Putsch alongside Hitler. It had been he that had stepped up within the SS to take the responsibility of orchestrating the demise of the SA in the Night of the Long Knives. As leader of the SS he had turned the small paramilitary force into one of the most powerful bodies in Nazi government

A

From 1934–1939 the SS were responsible for policing and gathering intelligence in Germany and were the primary instruments in the harassment and persecution of Jews in the early years of Nazi rule. By 1944, the power of the SS actually rivalled the might of the regular German army.
