The concept is based on a simple premise: people are competent and have knowledge, and their life experiences have given them that knowledge (Luis C. Moll, Cathy Amanti, Norma González, 2005).
Assets
- A useful and valuable quality that an individual has.
- Focus on what a student knows, understands, and is able to do.
- Uses a growth mindset - that all can learn when given supports and opportunities.
- No deficit language - not focused on what student cannot do.
Deficit Approach
- Focusing on what the student cannot do instead of what they know, understand, and are capable fo doing.
Growth Mindset
People believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point (Carol Dweck, 2013)
