Q

What are two meaning of “anybody” in the following sentences?

1) Anybody can do that.
2) I don’t know anybody who can do that.

A

1) n’importe qui
2) personne

NOTE: “Anybody” used in a positive statement means “n’importe qui”. To mean “personne”, it HAS TO be combined with a “negative” (i.e. ‘not”) in the sentence.

Examples: I didn’t see anybody. I don’t know anybody in Ontario. I **haven’t **spoken to anybody today.

If you don’t put a negative with the “anybody” but want to say ‘personne”, you have to use “nobody”. (Example: Nobody can do that. Nobody has time for more work. Nobody can take care of that right now.)
