Q

When on a hold, when do you request EFC?

A

If not received, request it when established in the hold. Hold clearance phrases: “Cleared to TRISS intersection. Hold west, as published. Maintain 2,500. Expect
further clearance 1820.” “Cleared to FINGR intersection. Hold south on 011 course, 1 minute leg, left turns. Maintain 2,500. Expect further clearance 1820.”

Q

When getting vectors to final, what should I do with my pen?

A

Be ready to copy approach clearance. Approach clearance phrases: For pilot nav.: “Frasca 141, maintain 2,500 until established. Cleared ILS runway 15 approach. Report final approach fix inbound.” If vectored: “Frasca 141, 3.5 miles from BRONS, turn left heading 180, maintain 2,200 until established. Cleared ILS runway 15 approach.” Near FAF (usually after), say “Frasca 141, contact tower 126.0.” or “Change to advisory frequency approved.”

Q

In a left crosswind, chairfly the approach.

A

Crab left using left rudder and left aileron (when necessary) to track center line. Keep slightly left of center line. In flair, right rudder to straighten plane but slight left aileron to keep wing low.

Q

Three rules of flying the plane?

A

AVIATE, navigate, communicate. On departure from PDK, I was asked to change transponder while flying by hand in IMC at 700AGL. While putzing with transponder I began banking right and didn’t even know it till I look at instruments again.

16
Q

On a missed approach, when do you setup the FLP for the next approach?

A

After established in the MAP hold. Wait until established on inbound course, change AP to HDG, then load new procedure.

17
Q

When in a GPS defined hold, what do you do to continue another hold loop?

A

Hit SUSP to suspend the next leg and circle continuously.

18
Q

When a RNAV approach is expected and you are selecting the approach, should you select vectors to final or an IF/IAF?

A

Select the best IF/IAF. Don’t select vectors to final because you don’t know when ATC might re-assign you to an IF/IAF in the procedure.

19
Q

If departing from a non-towered field on an IFR flight plan, should you study terrain a likely vectors?

A

Duh

20
Q

On an IFR flight plan in VMC conditions, should you study the TPA and direction?

A

Duh

21
Q

When can you depart IFR minimums on IFR flight plan on uncontrolled field?

A

When there’s a DP or ODP… otherwise you’ll fly in to something.

22
Q

Describe best method to maintain a VOR hold?

A

When approaching a VOR hold, set HDG bug to approach point, change AP to HDG, set GPS OBS to inbound leg of hold. Use HDG for turns and outbound legs, use GPS NAV for inbound legs.

23
Q

Do you have to fly on ODP when on an IFR plan?

A

No. It is pilot’s discretion. But even in VFR/VMC the ODP exists for a reason. If you don’t fly it be sure to understand why.

24
Q

If you plan to fly an ODP on an IFR flight plan, do you need to notify ATC?

A

You should notify them when getting the clearance.

25
Q

If an approach requires a turn greater than 90 degrees should you proceed?

A

No. Tell ATC unable and off an alternative (vectors to a fix on the approach that is workable).

26
Q

What do you put on the Flight Plan form if you intend to pickup your flight plan while airborne?

A

Put “PUP” in case moments section
