Elements of Film
Mise-en-scene, time, motion, editing, cinematography, sound
•from the French phrase “put into the scene”,
•this aspect of film form includes everything that appears before the camera within a shot.
•It can include planned elements like various props, lighting, costuming, make-up, staged body motions and facial expressions, the actor themselves, and CGI as well as unplanned elements like passing traffic and insects flying through the frame.
Mise-en-scene
a general term for all the manipulations of the film strip by the camera in the shooting phase. It also includes processes that occur in the laboratory after shooting.
Cinematography
There are three general aspects of cinematography to keep in mind:
Camera Angle
Camera Distance
Camera Movement.
is the single photographic exposure on film or video of the image. Frames are combined to create a shot.
Frame
is the deliberate use of light to achieve practical or aesthetic effects. Lighting includes the use of both artificial light sources as well as natural illumination by capturing daylight
Lightning
• actual length or duration of the film, for example, a run time of 90 minutes.
• The other type of time is called diegetic time or time that is the result of the story or narrative.
Time
is the motion that we see while we watch a film or video. Since everything moves it would be difficult to shoot a truly still shot with a film or video camera. There is always some motion somewhere
Motion
is one of the most powerful aspects in film that has three components to it. Sound in film has sound effects, dialogue and music. Music usually shapes the feelings and perceptions of a scene in a film to the audience. Dialogue and sound effects go together in a way that they are essential to help and bring us to the world of the film itself
Sound
includes any voice, musical passage or sound effect represented as originating within the film’s world.
Diegetic
would include mood music or narrator’s commentary represented as coming from outside the space of the narrative
Non diegetic
is the linking of two different pieces of film. After filming is complete, the editing process begins. The editor and director together will decide the length and order of the shots and piece them together to create a sequence.
Editing
good films manage to combine a lot of different emotions and feelings all at the same time. And generally, a good film will look at one or two important questions or themes and spend some time exploring the answers. Great films will usually not give you the answers – they will let you decide for yourself
Generalization: Functions of Film Most
combines theater, music and visual art. Early filmmakers would just set up a camera and film a stage production or an everyday event. The camera was fixed and static. Very quickly, though, filmmakers learned that you could move the camera for new and interesting angles. They were soon taking scissors to their film and cutting and arranging them into ordered sequences.
