What is the diagnosis of depression?
A
- At least 5 symptoms must be present everyday for two weeks
- The symptoms must include sadness or loss of interest
- The person will show impairment in general functioning that ha snot been caused by other events

Behavioural Characteristics of Depression: (SSSWAP)
A
S: Shift in Energy Levels - High levels of inactivity - Withdrawing from work, becoming agitated/restless S: Social Impairment - Reduced levels of social interaction S: Sleep Pattern Disturbance - Constant insomnia or hypersomnia W: Weight increase/decrease A: Aggression and Self Harm - Often irritable - Physically/Verbally aggressive - Self Harming, cutting themselves - Impulsive decisions e.g quitting job P: Poor Personal Hygiene - Reduced incidence of washing and wearing clean clothes

Emotional Characteristics of Depression: (CLAW)
A
C: Constant Depressed Mood - Feeling empty - Feelings of sadness and hopelessness L: Loss of Enthusiasm - Lack of pleasure in activities A: Anger - Anger directed to others/themselves - Anger arises from being hurt, wish to retaliate - Can result in self harm W: Worthlessness - Constant feelings of reduced worth - Feelings of guilt - Low levels of self esteem

T: Thoughts of Death - Constant thoughts of death/suicide - Believe the world is a better place without them - Make plans to end life (quitting job) R: Reduced Concentration - Struggling to pay attention - Slower thought processes - Difficulty making decisions A: Absoultist Thinking - All situations are either good or bad P: Poor Memory - Trouble retrieving memories - Poor memory in general N: Negative Thinking - Expect things to turn out badly - Negative expectations = self fulfilling prophecies - Positive factors are ignored, cognitive bias D: Delusions - Experience delusions, concerning guilt/hallucinations
