What does posterior mean?
Pertaining to the rear of the body
What does anterior mean?
Pertaining to the front of the body
What does cranial mean?
Pertaining to the cranium or head end of body
What does caudal mean?
Pertaining to the tail end of the body
What does cephalic mean?
Pertaining to the head end of the body
What does rostral mean?
Pertaining to the nose end of the body or toward the nose
What does dorsal mean?
Pertaining to the back area of the body (the back)
What does ventral mean?
Pertaining to the underside of the animal
What does medial mean?
Denoting a position closer to the median plane of the body
What does lateral mean?
Denoting a position farther away from the median plane of the body
What does axial mean?
Pertaining to or situated near a longitudinal line about which the body would rotate
What does peripheral mean?
Pertaining to or situated near the areas or surfaces of the body or a structure most distant from their origin.
What does superior mean?
Above
What does inferior mean?
Below
What does deep mean?
Far beneath the surface
What does superficial mean?
Near the surface; not deep
What does adjacent mean?
Next to, adjoining
What does proximal mean?
Nearest to the central axis of the body
What does distal mean?
Farthest from the center of the body
What does oblique mean?
On a plane not parallel to 1 of the 3 major directional axes
What does median mean?
Plane dividing body into equal left and right halves
What does Sagittal mean?
Plane parallel to the median plane, dividing the body into unequal left and right sides
What does transverse plane mean?
Plane dividing the body into cranial and caudal portions
What does dorsal plane mean?
Plane dividing body into dorsal and ventral portions orientated at right angles to the median plane
What does quadrants mean?
1 of four parts
What does recumbent mean?
Lying down. If modifying term is present, it describes the body surface on which the animal is laying
What does supine mean?
In dorsal recumbency
What does supination mean?
Act of turning the body or leg so it’s ventral aspect is up
What does prone mean?
In ventral recumbency
What does pronation mean?
Act of turning the body or leg so it’s ventral aspect is down
What does palmar mean?
The undersurface of the front foot
What does plantar mean?
The underside of the rear foot
What does abduction mean?
Movement of limb away from the median plane of the body
