Lesson 7 - Nitogen Cycle Flashcards
Look at the nitrogen cycle… memorise it
Nitrogen fixation
chemical processes by which atmospheric nitrogen is converted into nitrates in the soil
Purpose of nitrogen fixing bacteria
Found in the root nodules -convert nitrogen gas into nitrates
Purpose of decomposers
break down organic matter contain nitrogen, back into nitrogen accessible in soil
Purpose of denitrifying bacteria
break down nitrates into nitrogen gas, remove nitrates from soil
Purpose of nitrifying bacteria
break down ammonia into nitrates, add nitrates to soil
What do animals use for proteins for?
Growth or repair of tissues
What chemical is excreted in the urine?
Ammonia
What weather event fixes nitrogen gas into the soil?
Lightening
Where do nitrogen-fixing bacteria live (2 places)?
Soil and root nodules
What do plants use nitrates for?
Absorbed via root hairs to make proteins
