What are signs and symptoms

A

Vagnia
- change in vaginal discharge
irregular bleeding (especially after sex)
- pelvic pain, including pain during sexual intercourse
- stinging or burning when passing urine

Penis
- redness at the opening of the penis
- stinging or burning when passing urine
- discharge from the penis (which is often clear in colour)
- pain and swelling in the testicles

Anus
- You may experience discharge, bleeding or pain from the anus.

What are complications

A

If you have a vagina, untreated chlamydia can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) which is an infection of the uterus and fallopian tubes. PID can lead to infertility.

If you have a penis, untreated chlamydia can lead to infertility.

Contraceptive injection (Depo)

A

Depo injection is a hormone fluid injected into your bottom or arm muscle. It can last for 12 weeks.
Side affects: Irregular bleeding, possible weight gain, headaches, tender breasts, acne, loss of bone density
Suitability: Females over the age of 18 as it may affect a child’s bone density
How its obtained: Available from your doctor or family practitioner.

Method of Contraception:

Male condom

A

The condom is rolled over an erect penis before sex so semen and the sperm in it are collected inside the condom when ejaculation occurs. The condom is then removed after sex.
Side effects: None, except some people may be allergic to latex rubber or the lubricant that covers it.
Suitability: Can be used by all males.
How its obtained: It can be purchased from various outlets, including chemists, supermarkets, vending machines and sexual health clinics.

Natural methods

A

Methods of calculating when a woman is likely to be ovulating include:
- calendar method- recording dates of periods to determine when ovulation may take place
- temperature method - recording temperature daily to monitor changes that occur with ovulation
- mucus changes - recognising and recording changes in the texture and appearance of cervical mucus.
Side effects: none
Suitability: Can be used by anyone. The calendar method can be unreliable, particularly if menstruation is irregular.
How its obtained: Advice on how to recognise and record signs of ovulation can be obtained from a doctor.
