Lesson 7 Flashcards
Multiple Sclerosis
A condition that happens when the immune system attacks neurons in the CNS (the brain or spinal cord) - Specifically attacks the myelin sheath of CNS neurons.
Myasthenia Gravis
The immune system damages the communication system between the nerves and muscles, making the muscles weak and easily tired. When Ach (neurotransmitter) is in the synapse it gets attacked and destroyed.
Heredity
The genetic transfer of characteristics from parents to offspring. Genetic characteristics that influence physical, behavioural and mental traits.
Nature
The influence of our inherited characteristics on our personality, physical growth, intellectual growth, and social interactions
Nurture
Care for and protect (someone or something) while they are growing. The environment in which someone is brought up in…
Genetic predisposition
Increased chance that a person will develop a disease based on their genetic makeup
Evolutionary perspective
Our personalities and individual differences have evolved, in part, to provide us with some form of adaptive advantage in the context of survival and reproduction
Natural selection
Any genetically determined behavior that enhances the ability to survive and reproduce will continue in future generations
Eugenics
The principle of improving the human species by selectively mating people with specific desirable traits
Twin studies
Identical (monozygotic) - they share 100% of the same genes
Fraternal (dizygotic) - they share 50% of the same genes.
Family studies
Adoption studies
