What changes took place in the Samurai under the Tokugawa shogunate?
Samurai no longer needed to engage in warfare so they became government official

As Tokugawa ruled, what happened to peasants?
They were generally better off but Still suffered from periods of famine when crops failed
How were merchants affected during the Tokugawa Shogunate?
incomes grew and they were able to afford a more luxurious lifestyle
How much power did shoguns have and why?
A shogun was a powerful Japanese military leader and land-owner, or daimyo, who became strong enough to essentially rule Japan.
When were early Japanese castles popular?
1300CE
What were the main features of early Japanese castles?
- Temporary fortresses used only in times of war and modeled after warrior chiefs own homes
- Built on mountain ridges - giving the defense a lookout
- Watchtower
what were the main features of 15th and 16th century castles?
- Very elaborate
- Built on plains rather than mountains
- Had an outer moat
- Solid stone foundation
- Stone walls
