Dock
One-click access to your favorite apps and files, similar to the taskbar in windows. Whenever an app is open it displays a dot below the icon.
Spotlight Search
Used to find anything is macOS. To start a new search click the magnifying glass or press COMMAND+SPACE
Terminal
Access the Command Line Interface, uses either Z shell or Bash. Oldest macOS versions use Bash and zsh is the default for Catalina and up.
Mission Control and Multiple Desktops
Window management and enables the user to set up multiple desktops with different sets of apps, backgrounds, and so on.
Activated with F3, To switch between Desktops click F3 and choose a Desktop by using CONTROL + LEFT or CONTROL + RIGHT or a 3/4 finger gesture swipe.
System Preferences
Equivalent of Windows Settings app. Go-to place for changing settings and network option and optimizing a macOS configuration.
Apples Keyboards
Mac keyboards have an APPLE/POWER key and COMMAND , OPTION , and CONTROL keys. COMMAND is closest to the CTRL key in terms of functionality, and OPTION is usually mapped to ALT .
Apple Magic Mouse and Trackpad and Gesture Support
Macs do not support touch screen interfaces, but they do support gesture-enabled Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad peripherals.
open the Trackpad prefpane to see the gesture options.
Display
scale the desktop, set the brightness level, calibrate to a given color profile, and configure Night Shift settings to make the display adapt to ambient light conditions.
Accessibility Panel
used to configure assistive vision and sound options, such as VoiceOver narration of screen elements, cursor size and motion settings, zoom tools, display contrast and font sizes, and captioning.
Security and User Management
An Administrator account and an optional Guest User account are created when macOS is installed. To add a new account, open System Preferences > Users & Groups
Apple ID
Used for purchases from the App Store, accessing iCloud and other functions. You can log out of the Apple ID using the button on the System Preference home page.
Security and Privacy
Options to configure what analytics/telemetry data and personalized information can be collected, plus permissions for apps to use features such as the location service or camera or data stores such as contacts and calendar.
Internet Accounts and Keychain
Associate other email and cloud accounts with your login. Keychain and iCloud Keychain helps you manage passwords for these accounts, other websites and Wi-Fi networks.
If discrepancies occur from Keychain, access Utilities from Keychain Access App.
Filevault
A disk encryption product. Protects the data stored on a disk against the posibility of a threat factor could remove it from the computer and use a foreign OS to read the file.
Finder and iCloud
Finder
macOS equivalent of File Explorer in Windows. Allows navigation of all the files and folders.
iCloud
Apple’s online storage solution for it’s users. Provides a central, shared location for mail, contacts, calendars, photos, notes, reminder, and so on across macOS and iOS Devices.
App installation and Management
central portal for Apple and developers to distribute free and paid-for software. Distribute updates to macOS new releases of the operating system.
Installation of Downloaded Apps
System Preferences > Security and Privacy. Select the padlock to make changes to the settings. Enter Administrator password.
macOS package installer formats
DMG:(Disk Image) format is used for simple installs where the package contents need to be copied to the Application Folder.
PKG: Requires more actions, such as running a service or writing files to multiple folders.
When installed it is placed in the .APP extension in the application folder.
App Uninstallation Process
Simply use the Finder to delete the .APP directory or drag to the trash.

Corporate Restrictions
installation of macOS can be enrolled in a mobile device/endpoint management suite.
supervised macOS can be restricted in terms of app installation and uninstallation policies.
Network and Device Settings
Network
Can be managed from the Status menu on the right hand side of the menu or via System Preferences.
Click Advanced button to configure IP properties and proxy settings.
Printer and Scanner
Printer and Scanner prefpane to add and manage print and scan services.
Disk Utility
App can be used to verify or repair a disk or file system. It can also be used to erase a disk with security options in case you are planning to sell or passing on a mac.
Optical Drives and Remote Disc
No optical drive has been sold in an Apple Mac.
Programs like Remote Disc are used by macOS tool for sharing an optical drive over the network.
To setup Remote Disc open System Preference>Sharing checkmark the box next to DVD or CD Sharing.
To access an optical drive, select Remote Disc in Finder.
Time Machine Bakcup
Enables data to be backed up to an external drive or partitioned formatted using APFS or macOS’s older extended file system.
Back up: Hourly backups for the past 24 hours.
Daily backup for a month
Weekly backup for all previous months.
When space is full Time Machine will delete past files to make space for the new backups.
Restoring Files from Time Machine
Using Finder window in Time Machine, find the file/files that you want to restore. Then slide the timeline back to the date and time of the previous versions.
Troubleshoot Crashes and Boot Issue
App crashes and force quit
Spinning wait cursor stays in an infinite loop causing the app to become unresponsive.
Force Quit: From the Apple Menu or
Press COMMAND+OPTION+ESC
Recovery Menu
reinstall macOS from a system image, or reformat or repair the system disk.
To access the Recovery menu, as you power up the Apple Mac, hold down the COMMAND+R keys until you see the Apple logo. After selecting your language, it will boot into macOS Recovery, enabling you to select from the options shown in the following figure.
