What did Abigail Adams advocate for?
Abigail Adams was the wife of John Adams, and exchanged long letters with him advocating for women’s rights ad encouraging him to support women’s independence.
What does Abigail describe in the first paragraph of this letter? How do you know?
She is describing the state of Boston after the British left the city. She explains this is largely from the “precipitate fight,” or quick departure, of the British.
What other clues does Abigail give that Boston is no longer occupied by the British?
She explains that a month prior, they were concerned about farming but now they “fell as if they might sit under their own vine and eating the good of the land.”
What evidence suggests that Abigail Adams is a Patriot?

What was the fear of training African Americans?

How did Abigail Adams, Betsy Ross, Mercy Otis Warren, Mary Ludwig Hays, and Deborah Sampson contribute to the American Revolution?
Abigail Adams- She exchanged long letters with John Adams about politics and the war, advising him on many issues.
Betsy Ross- Made the American Flag with the 13 stars and the 13 stripes.
Mercy Otis Warren- She wrote plays and poems inspiring patriotism.
Mary Ludwig Hays- She ran back and forth with heavy pitchers of water to pour on the cannons so that they wouldn’t overheat.
Deborah Sampson- She dressed up as a man in order to join the revolution. She was so good that doctors didn’t know she was a woman until she got severely injured.
Why do you think women are so effective as messengers and spies during the American Revolution?
Because they were not taken seriously by their male counterparts, allowing them to move into spaces and places to collect information without being collected.
Although African Americans took up arms for the British after receiving promises of freedom and land, and why did some African Americans choose to support the Patriots’ cause?
They saw their own freedom as linked to that of the United States.
Who was Phillis Wheatly, and what impact did she have an American History?
She wrote poems that inspired African Americans to join the fight and achieve their independence. She was an African American slave. She gained her freedom in 1773.
How do you think Wheatly felt about King George when she wrote this poem?
She was probably mad at him and think that he wasn’t a good king, because he was placing so many acts on the colonists. The colonists were probably making the salves work 2x as much.
What advice does she give the King in this poem?
She wants the King to stop being a tyrant.
