Lesson 6 - Psychological explanations for SKIZ - family dysfunction Flashcards
double bind hypothesis
children are given conflicting and mixed messages from parents and feel they cannot do the right thing.
double bind example
parents say i love you whilst shouting at child
what is the result of double bind hypothesis
the child cannot construct an internally coherent sense of reality
they might develop skiz symptoms such as paranoia and withdrawal
marital schism
family dysfunction can induce strange behaviour for kids. causes distress and confusion, develop skiz symptoms
when parents fight and involve the kids
examples of family dysfunction
physical abuse
manipulation
parent abandonment
lack of family time
strength of family dysfunction
+ berger found that skiz have a higher recall of 2xbind by their mum than non skiz
+ support from psychodynamic theory, schizophrenogenic mum who is cold leads to stress and therefore skiz developed
weaknesses of family dysfunction
w- Ps have to rely on mems which isn’t accurate bcs they have to think back over a long period of time
w- cause and effect
w- ethical issues, keep family matters confidential and not invade family privacy
EE- Kavanaugh
expressed emotion- set of traits whereby family members talk about the skiz in a neg matter
negative emotional interactions may cause and maintain symptoms of SKIZ
EE traits
criticism
hostility
emotional over involvement
families w high EE talk more than they listened= skiz have low tolerance for intense emotional comments
strength of EE
+ brown conducted research showing high EE caused skiz/relapse
+ lots of support from many diff cultures , families w high EE are encouraged to undergo training to reduce EE
weakness of EE
w- skiz have low contact w fam bcs they’re institutionalised. minimal chance of EE being a factor
w- cause and effect
w- ignored biological factors, there’s lots of research support for bio that can’t be ignored
