Lesson 6: F-A hypothesis Flashcards
Who came up with F-A hypothesis?
Dollard et al
What is F-A Hypothesis?
Based on psychodynamic explanation of catharsis
Dollard et al proposed if we experience frustration, leads to aggression
Aggression is cathartic release of built up frustration
If indiv prevented from achieving goal, leads to frustration which always leads to aggression
What did Freud propose?
Drive for aggression was innate
Only way to reduce aggression is to engage in activity releasing it
Why can’t aggression not always be expressed directed against source of frustration?
- Cause of frustration abstract
- Cause too powerful and we risk punishment by being aggressive against it
- Cause unavailable at the time
2 psychodynamic defence mechanisms used in catharsis of aggression.
- Sublimation: using aggression in acceptable way (sport)
- Displacement: directing aggression outwards towards something else or someone else
What is the weapon effect?
Berkowitz proposed frustration doesn’t always lead to aggression
Aggression only occurs in presence of certain cues (weapons)
Indiv may feel frustrated and not show aggression but if they see weapon, use weapon to pent our aggression
GOOD EVAL
- Research support (Russell Green, jigsaw puzzle. 3 conditions, 2 parts, all 3 groups higher shocks than control group)
- practical application
BAD
- Actual research support mainly come from lab experiments and so lack ecological validity
- Link between aggression and frustration more complex
