Lesson 6 Flashcards
What audio file formats can be imported to Pro Tools without requiring conversion? (pg 108)
Waveform Audio File Format (.WAV) or Audio Interchange File Format (.AIFF).
What condition would cause a file in one of Pro Tools’ native formats to require conversion on import? (pg 108)
Different sample rate.
Although the bit depth of the Pro Tools file can be different from the audio file, the sample rate must match between the session and audio file.
Name some common audio file formats that Pro Tools can convert on import.
MP3, Sound Designer II (SD II), Audio Interchange File Compressed (AIFC), WAV & AIFF.
What are some video file formats that can be imported by Pro Tools? (pg 109)
Avid MXF & Quicktime formats.
What is the difference between split stereo and interleaved stereo?
Which is/are supported for importing into Pro Tools 12? (pg 109)
Split stereo: Represented in two separate mono for Left & Right channels.
Interleaved stereo: Stereo information is combined into a single file that contains both L & R channels.
Either format can be imported without any conversion.
What is the difference between the Add button in the Import Audio dialog box and the copy button?
Which button will force-copy the files into your session’s Audio Files folder? (pg 111)
Add button is to import files/clips without copying them to the Audio Files folder. Whereas Copy button is to import files/clips and force-copy them to the session’s Audio Files folder.
Copy button.
What happens when you use the Workspace browser to import audio that is not compatible with your session’s parameters (in other words, audio that requires conversion)?
What happens when you import audio that does not require conversion? (pg 112)
Workspace browsers provide audition capabilities for Pro Tools, which means that all audio files imported (by dragging into the session from the Workspace Browsers) are automatically converted to be compatible with the session parameters.
If the audio does not need conversion, it’ll only be referenced and not copied.
What steps are required to conduct a search for an audio file using the Workspace Browser? (pg 112)
- Window menu > New workspace > Default
- Select Advanced Search (Magnifying glass icon)
- Choose the folder that you want to search by selecting it in the Locations pane on the right side of the window (in this case, choose “Audio” folder).
- Click “Kind” and “File type” on the Search Column.
How would you go about importing a Quicktime movie file to Pro Tools while simultaneously importing the audio embedded in the file?
(Make sure that the Video Engine is enabled in the Playback Engine option)
- File menu > Import > Video
- Select “Import Audio from File” option in the Video Import Options dialog box
How many video files can be associated with a standard Pro Tools session at once? (pg 115)
