Lesson 6 Flashcards
Identify the features of the Taiga forest
- Tree branches are flexible under the weight of the snow
- Dark green needle colour help absorb the sunlight
- Trees grow close together to protect them from the wind
Why do needle have small surface area ?
So they lose less water and they have a waxy layer which reduces water loss
Explain why the Taiga forest needs protecting
Fragile ecosystems, therefore takes a long time to recover. The plants take a long time to grow back back because of the lack of nutrients and cold winters.
What role has fossil fuel played in the energy source of Canada?
Fossil fuel was the main source of energy and 50% was used during in transport
How does deforestation occur in Taiga?
- Tourism
- Acid Rain
- Forest Fires
- Mineral Extraction
What are the threats abiotic factors?
- Acid Rain
- Forest Fires
- Food Web
Why cannot the soil support the large biomass?
Soil are thin, low in nutrient and acidic.
Why is the biodiversity low overall?
Nutrient supply is much lower and can support far fewer plant and animal species.
What are the economic benefits?
There are jobs to help them preserve the forest
How are moose adapted?
- Can eat pine needles
- Thick fur
- Has large antlers
How are bears adapted?
- Build up fat layers in summer for hibernation
- Thick fur
