lesson 6 Flashcards
what is chromatography
Chromatography is the technique for the separation, purification, and testing of compounds
when is chromatography used?
in water solubles like
inks
dyes/paints
colouring agents
name ALL key words in chromatography
stationary phase- the one which does not move with the sample
mobile phase-one which moves with the sample
pencil line- a pencil line not pen bc it smuges
solvent- thing that the ink dissolves into
ink samples - samples of ink
chromatography paper-It contains an adsorbent layer, typically silica gel or cellulose derivatives, that allows for the separation and migration of different components of a mixture.
what does it mean if the ink has risen up more
it is more soluble
what does it mean if there is diffrent dots on the paper
its made of multiple colors
how to do experiment
Prepare the Filter Paper:
Cut a strip of filter paper about 2 cm wide and long enough to extend from the bottom of the container to just over its rim.
Draw a horizontal line lightly with a pencil about 2 cm from one end of the strip. This will be the starting line.
Apply the Ink:
Place a small dot or line of ink on the pencil line. You can use a single dot from a black pen.
Prepare the Container:
Fill the container with a small amount of water, just enough to cover the bottom but not so much that the water will touch the ink dot directly when the paper is placed in the container.
Initiate the Chromatography:
Hang the strip of filter paper in the container so that the bottom end is submerged in the water, but the ink dot is above the water level. You can tape the top of the strip to the rim of the container to hold it in place.
Observe the Separation:
Allow the water to travel up the paper. As it moves past the ink dot, it will carry the ink pigments with it. Different pigments in the ink will travel at different rates, causing them to separate along the strip of paper.
Remove and Dry:
Once the water has nearly reached the top of the paper strip, remove it from the container and lay it flat to dry.
whats capillary action?
Capillary Action: The water moves up the paper strip through capillary action. Capillary action is the ability of a liquid to flow in narrow spaces without the assistance of external forces
what if the ink does not move at all
it is not soluble
if i had blue that did not move red that moved but purple that moved more than red which is most soluble make a list
v most soluble v
1)purple
2)red
3)blue
^ not soluble ^
if i had a red dye and there was 2 spots how many colours are in the dye
2
if i had a green dye and there was 1 spot how many colours are in the dye
