- to identify location where the action takes place
- to identify who will be in the scene i.e actors, narrators
- To provide stage directions for the actors and production team
- To provide dialogue (i.e speech) for actors and other characters

- to set the tone and style for the project

it is a suitable pre- production document because it tells the director, actors and producers what exactly they are going to make in terms of the project (if in question insert narrative here)
