Lesson 5: Microscopy Flashcards
What is Magnification?
The number of times larger an image appears compared to the real size of the structure
What is Resoltion?
The ability to distinguish between two separate objects
What are the different types of Microscopes?
-Light Microscope
-Laser Scanning Microscope
-Transmission Electron Microscope
-Scanning Electron Microscope
What are Light Microscopes?
-Use beams of light to produce and image
-Light passes through specimen
-Two magnifications (Objective Lens and Eyepiece Lens)
-Maximum magnification: x1500-x2000
-Resolution: 200nm
What are Laser Scanning Microscopes?
-Use laser lights to scan an object point by point
-Depth Selectivity
-Used to observe whole living specimens
How are Electron Microscopes different?
-Use a beam of electrons
-Focused using magnets
-Dehydrated specimens
What are Transmission Electron Microscopes?
-Electrons pass through the specimen
-2D greyscale images
-Maximum magnification: x2000000
-Resolution: 0.5nm
What are Scanning Electron Microscopes?
-Electrons reflect off of the specimen
-3D greyscale images
-Maximum magnification: x200000
-Resolution: 3-10nm
