Lesson 5- Conditions & Lifestyles Impacting CL Wear Flashcards
What is the Aqueous Layer?
Middle layer of the tear film that consists of 98% water
What is Blepharitis?
An eyelid problem where the margins of the lids are inflamed. It is usually caused by an infection.
What is Bowman’s Layer?
The thin layer between the epithelium and stroma.
What is Bullous keratopathy?
Characterized by stromal edema and anterior corneal bullae (a blister-like swelling) rooted in the loss of corneal endothelial cell integrity and function.
What is the Conjunctiva?
Mucous membrane that lines both the anterior sclera and inside of the eyelids.
What is the Cornea?
Anterior refracting surface of the eye. It consists of transparent tissue and is devoid of blood vessels.
What is Corneal edema?
When the forces which normally dehydrate the cornea are overcome by the forces which drive water into the cornea.
What are Corneal striae?
Linear opacities in the cornea.
What is Corneal neovascularization?
The invasion of blood vessels into the cornea.
What is Descemet’s Membrane?
Composed of collagen fibrils, this layer is the basement membrane of the endothelium.
What is the Endothelium?
The innermost layer of the cornea, consisting of a single layer of flattened cells.
What is Episcleral injection?
Nonspecific manifestation of conjunctiva inflammation.
What is the Epithelium?
The corneal epithelium is highly regenerative, demonstrating a remarkable.
What is Exophthalmos?
Abnormal eyeball (bulb) protrusion. Can lead to dryness and diplopia (double vision).
What is Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis (GPC)?
A conjunctival, allergic response, related to contact lens wear.
What does Hypotonic mean?
Relates to the water content of a solution/environment, relative to another. In a hypotonic environment, more water flows in than out, so it swells.
What is Keratitis sicca (dry eye syndrome)?
Occurs when eye dryness, typically due to tear deficiencies, causes the cornea to become inflamed.
What is Keratoconus?
A non-inflammatory, progressive degenerative disease in which the cornea develops irregular steepening and thinning (corneal ectasia).
What is the Limbus?
A transition zone between the cornea and the sclera.
What is the Lipid Layer?
The outermost layer of the tear film that consists of a fatty material produced by the meibomian glands on the eyelid.
What are Microcysts?
Fluid accumulated in the spaces left by ruptured cells within the cornea.
What is the Mucin Layer?
The innermost layer of the tear film which sits immediately adjacent to the corneal and conjunctival epithelial cells.
What is Nystagmus?
A condition in which the eyes oscillate repetitively and without control.
What is Pinguecula?
Benign (noncancerous) growth that develops on the conjunctiva and does not invade the cornea.
