lesson 5 Flashcards
The word quantum comes from the Latin word “quantus”, which means
how much, amount, or quantity
Max Plank, a German theoretical physicist discovered the energy of quanta(plural of quantum). This is now known as
The quantum mechanics (Quantum Theory of Mechanics)
which is the branch of physics which
pertains to anything that is very small.
The quantum mechanics (Quantum Theory of Mechanics)
is the speed of something in a given
direction.
Velocity
amount of space between two things,
points, lines or the state of being apart in space of one thing from another.
Distance
is the ongoing sequence of events taking place in the past, present and future.
Time
It refers to the distance between two
successive wave crests or throughs.
WAVELENGTH(λ)
measure of wavelength
1 Å = 10 -10 m
Å = angstrom
1 nm = 10 -9 m
nm = nanometer
1 m = 1,000 mm
1 m = 100 cms.
It refers to the number of waves passing a
particular point in a unit of time.
FREQUENCY(υ)
measures of frequency
1 Hz = 1 cycle/s = 1 1/s
Hz = hertz
1 kHz = 1,000 Hz
1 MHz = 1,000,000 Hz
It refers to the distance travelled by EM
radiation per unit time.
VELOCITY(V)
measures of velocity
- speed of EM radiation in a vacuum or
free space = 3 x 108 m/s
= 3 x 1010 cm/s
= 300,000 km/s
= 186,000 mi/s
As the frequency increases, the
wavelength decreases.
It states that the photon energy is directly
proportional to the photon frequency.
PLANCK’S QUANTUM THEORY (QUANTUM
THEORY OF MECHANICS)
It states that matter can be transformed into
energy or vice versa.
THEORY OF RELATIVITY
