LESSON 4.3 Sampling and Sampling Techniques Flashcards
What is sampling?
The process of obtaining samples from the population.
What are the two categories of sampling?
Probability sampling and non-probability sampling.
What is probability sampling?
A method where every member of the population has an equal chance of being selected.
What is non-probability sampling?
A method where not all members of the population have an equal chance of being selected.
Why is probability sampling important?
It is required to properly use statistical inference techniques.
What is simple random sampling?
A probability sampling technique where all subsets of n elements from a population of N have equal chances of selection.
What is systematic sampling?
A probability sampling method where the first element is selected randomly, and the rest are chosen systematically at every kth interval.
What is stratified random sampling?
A probability sampling method where the population is divided into strata, and proportional samples are taken from each stratum.
What is cluster sampling?
A probability sampling method where the population is divided into clusters, and a sample of clusters is selected. All members of the selected clusters are included in the sample.
What is accidental sampling?
A non-probability sampling method where samples are chosen conveniently or haphazardly by the researcher.
What is quota sampling?
A non-probability sampling technique where a specified number of persons from certain categories are included, proportional to their representation in the population.
What is purposive sampling?
A non-probability sampling method where the researcher uses judgment to select representative samples.
What is snowball sampling?
A non-probability sampling technique where a primary sample group is used to refer additional samples meeting the same criteria.
