Q

What is UNDRIP?

A

● In 2007 all but 4 members of the UN adopted the UNDRIP, a document that formally outlines the ways in which Indigenous people see solutions for themselves moving forward in out current reality and how they understand their HUMAN rights
- Written by Indigenous people globally
● The 4 countries that did not adopt the declaration, but have all since done so, were Canada, US, Australia, and New Zealand
● These 4 countries all voted against the recognition of Indigenous peoples rights because all of their constitutions and claims to the land rest on the genocide of Indigenous people
● The purpose of UNDRIP is to create a “universal framework of minimum standards for the survival, dignity, and wellbeing of the Indigenous Peoples of the world”
● It clearly outlines the human rights and freedom that are particular to Indigenous peoples specific circumstances
● Written BY Indigenous Peoples not FOR Indigenous Peoples (Peoples – collectively)
