Lesson 4 - The Endocrine System Flashcards
How do hormones affect the body compared to electric impulses?
- Act much slower
- More widespread and powerful effects
Main glands in the body
Top to bottom
- Hypothalamus
- Pineal and Pituitary gland
- Thyroid
- Thymus
- Pancreas
- Adrenal gland
- Ovaries/placenta/testes
Thyroid
Releases thyroxine which regulates the body’s metabolic rate and protein synthesis
Adrenal medulla
Adrenine and noradrenaline which regulate the fight or flight response
Testes
Androgens/testosterone, which develop sexual male characteristics and promote muscle mass and growth
Pineal gland
Releases melatonin, which regulates arousal and biological rhythms
Anterior pituitary gland
Releases FSH, which stimulates the release of follicles
Releases TSH, which stimulates the thyroid gland
Releases MSH, which stimulates the production of melanin
Posterior pituitary gland
Releases oxytocin which is important in promoting uterine contractions in childbirth
