we do not create ourselves out of nothing
we need others to affirm amd reinforce who we think we are
what is important to us are affected/influenced by what is important in our social or historical context
Self awareness
clear perception of personality including strengths, weaknesses. thoughts, beliefs, motivation, and emotions

ideal - who we like to be in the future
ought - who we think we should be in contrast to our actual self
social comparison theory
we learn abt ourselves, the appripriateness of our behavior, as well as our social status
two kinds of social comparison theory
downward - most common
upward - comparing ourselves with those who are better off us
self evaluation maintenance theory
states that we can feel threatened when someone outperforms us
three ways that a person reacts when someone outperforms him/her
distance
reconsider the importance of the skill where you were outperformed
strengthen resolve to improve that certain aspect
narcissism
overly high self-esteem, self admiration, and self-centeredness
