Lesson 4 Measures of location Flashcards
are numerical description measures which indicate or locate the center of a distribution
measures of central tendency
In layman’s term, a measure of central tendency is an
average
commonly used measures of central tendency
MEAN / MEDIAN / MODE
a set of values or measurement is the sum of all the measurements divided by the number of measurements in the set.
MEAN
The mean is the most popular and widely used. It is sometimes called the
arithmetic mean
characteristics of the mean
- most appropriate measure of central tendency (interval or ratio)
- lies between the largest and smallest values or measurements
- only one value for the mean for a given set of values or measurements
- easily influenced by extreme values
To find the mean of a set of values wherein each value or measurement has a different weight or degree of importance
Weighted Arithmetic Mean
the middle value of a given set of measurements, provided that the values or measurements are arranged in an array
MEDIAN
characteristics of the median
- most appropriate measure of central tendency (interval data)
- lies between the highest and lowest measurements
- only one value for the median in a given set of measurements.
- not influenced by extreme values
- It is the value where 50% or half of the distribution lies above it and 50% lies below it
is the value which occurs most frequently in as set of measurements or values.
MODE
least common among the three measures of central tendency
very useful as a measure of popularity
for ungrouped data is fairly easy to
find, the value or measurement which occurs the most number of times
MODE
Unimodal
One mode
Bimodal
two modes
Trimodal
Three modes
Multimodal
more than 3 values for the mode
