ankylosing spondylitis
chronic, progressive inflammatory disease- involves joints of the spine & surrounding soft tissue- most common in young males
arthritis
inflammation of a joint
chondrocarcoma
a malignant tumor of cartilage
herniated disk
protrusion of the center of an intervertebral disk into the spinal canal; ruptured or “slipped” disk
kyphosis
exaggerated curve of spine in thoracic region; hunchback
lordosis
exaggerated curve of spine in lumbar region; swayback
osteoarthritis
progressive deterioration of joint cartilage with growth of new bone and soft tissue in and around the joint- most common form of arthritis; results from wear & tear, injury or disease
osteoma
a benign bone tumor that usually remains small and localized
osteomalacia
softening and weakening of the bones due to vit D deficiency or other disease
osteomyelitis
inflammation of bone and bone marrow caused by infection, usually bacterial
osteopenia
lower than average bone density
osteoporosis
severe reduction in bone density- most common in caucasian women past menopause
osteosarcoma
a malignant bone tumor; osteogenic sarcoma
Paget disease
bone thickening and distortion with bowing of long bones- seen in the elderly; osteitis deformans
rheumatoid arthritis
chronic autoimmune disease of unknown origin- results in inflammation of peripheral joints & related structures- more common in women
