Need cannot be defined without regard to what?
Social context in which people or groups live and work
Do people always know they have a need? What are some things that might prevent them from knowing that?
No, might be unaware, deny, or misidentify their need.
Why should you assess need?
To provide info for tailoring a program to a specific population.
What are some basic questions answered through needs assessment?
What is the greatest area of need and how do we best target the primary identified problem areas.
Normative Need
A condition or situation defined by an expert (i.e. lack, deficit or inadequacy)
Perceived Need
What members of the target audience say they want (ascertained by consulting clients)
Expressed Need
A demand for service (i.e. health care seeking behavior)
Comparative/ Relative Need
Comparison between advantaged and disadvantaged groups.
How do those getting services differ from those who do not receive services?
Primary Data Collection
Qualitative, Quantitative, and Observational
Secondary Data Collection
Published Literature, National Databases
