lesson 4 Flashcards
in computing, is a group of two or more devices that can communicate. In practice, a network is comprised of different computer systems connected by physical and/ or wireless connections.
Network
Networking of computers helps the network users to share data files
file sharing
Users can share devices such as printers, scanners, CD-ROM drives, hard drives etc. Without computer networks, device sharing is not possible.
hardware sharing
Applications can be shared over the network, and this allows to implement client/server applications
Application sharing
Networks allow users to communicate using e-mail, newsgroups, and video conferencing etc.
User communication
A lot of network games are available, which allow multi-users to play from different locations.
Network gaming
is a revolutionary change in telecommunication which allows to send telephone calls (voice data) using standard Internet Protocol (IP) rather than by traditional PSTN.
Voice over Internet Protocol (voIP)
is a group of computers connected to each other in a small area such as building, office.
The data is transferred at an extremely faster rate in
provides higher security.
Local area network (LAN)
-is a network that covers a larger geographic area by interconnecting a different LAN to form a larger network.
-Large network that connects different organizations
-Government agencies use MAN to connect to the citizens and private industries.
Metropolitan area network (MAN)
-is a network that extends over a large geographical area such as states or countries.
-two or more LANs connected
-Over a large geographic area
-Typically use public or leased lines
–Phone lines
–Satellite
Wide-area network (WAN)
sometimes called simply “the Net,” is a worldwide system of computer networks – a network of networks in which users at any one computer can, if they have permission, get information from any other computer
Internet
Use of Internet
- Communication
- Entertainment
- Online banking
- Shopping
- Sending emails
- Business promotion
- Research
- Games
is defined as two or more computer network LANs or WAN or computer network segments are connected using devices, and they are configured by a local addressing scheme. This process is known as ____________ing.
internetwork
website that is setup internally for companies and can be accessed by employees for the purpose of standard documents or information and many items of information and data.
Intranet
is a private network that uses Internet technology and the public telecommunication system to securely share part of a business’s information or operations with suppliers, vendors, partners, customers, or other businesses. An extranet can be viewed as part of a company’s intranet that is extended to users outside the company.
Extranet
-any company that provides individuals or organizations with Internet access
-Charge a monthly fee
-Many ISPs and online services offer broadband Internet access through digital subscriber lines (DSLs), cable, or satellite transmission
Internet service provider (ISP)
the study of the arrangement or mapping of the elements (links, nodes, etc.) of a network, especially the physical (real) and logical (virtual) interconnections between nodes.
network topology
The simplest topology is a permanent link between two endpoints.
Point to point
In local area networks where bus topology is used, each node is connected to a single cable. Each computer or server is connected to the single bus cable.
BUS topology
In local area networks with a star topology, each network host is connected to a central hub with a point-to-point connection. In Star topology every node (computer workstation or any other peripheral) is connected to central node called hub or switch.
star topology
s a network topology that is set up in a circular fashion in which data travels around the ring in one direction and each device on the ring acts as a repeater to keep the signal strong as it travels. Each device incorporates a receiver for the incoming signal and a transmitter to send the data on to the next device in the ring.
ring topology
Is a networktopologyin which devices are connected with many redundant interconnections between network nodes.
mesh topology
When a topology is composed of two or more different topologies it is referred to as a hybrid topology. Hybrid topologies aremost-commonly encountered in larger enterpriseswhere individual departments have network topologies that different from another topology in the organization. Connecting these topologies together will result in a hybrid topology.
hybrid topology
This particular type of network topology is based on a hierarchy of nodes. The highest level of any tree network consists of a single, ‘root’ node, this node connected either a single (or, more commonly, multiple) node(s) in the level below by (a) point-to-point link(s). These lower level nodes are also connected to a single or multiple nodes in the next level down.
