(12 cards)
It is a social, political, and cultural movement that aims to achieve equality for all genders, with a particular focus on improving the rights and opportunities of women.
Feminism
• All genders should have equal rights.
• Social norms that limit or oppress women (or any gender) must be challenged and changed.
• Gender inequality is not just a women’s issue—it affects everyone.
Feminist Beliefs
is concerned with “the ways in which literature (and other cultural productions) reinforce or undermine the economic, political, social, and psychological oppression of women”
(Tyson 83).
The goal of - is to bring awareness about the sexual politics and to analyze the writings of women writers from the feminist perspective. It also includes the language and style of writing to determine the relationship between the genders in terms of power.
We use the feminist approach by closely examining the portrayal of the characters, both female and male.
Feminist critics analyze how literary work is influenced by a male dominated society.
Feminists feel that authors look for non-feminine objects or characters and describe them as feminine to belittle them and make woman look bad (Brayton)
Feminist Approach
The feminist critique of literature seeks to raise the consciousness about the importance and unique nature of women in literature, and to point out how language has been used to marginalize women.
Feminist Criticism
This is the idea that people of all genders should have the same rights, opportunities, and treatment. Feminism works to address the power imbalances and systemic inequalities that prevent this from happening.
Gender Equality
A system of society or government in which men hold the power and women are largely excluded from it. Feminists work to dismantle patriarchal structures that perpetuate gender-based inequality.
Patriarchy
These are oversimplified and widely held beliefs about a group of people. In many cultures, women have been stereotyped as being weaker, less intelligent, or more emotional than men.
Feminist theory critiques these harmful stereotypes and challenges their impact on society.
Stereotypes
When applying the feminist approach to films, books, or other forms of media, we ask critical questions about how women and men are represented.
Are women portrayed as strong, complex characters, or are they reduced to one-dimensional roles?
How are male and female characters treated in the narrative?
Representation
How does the media reinforce traditional gender roles?
For example, does the female character need to be rescued by the male character, or does she take control of her own fate?
Gender Roles
Does the media objectify women, reducing them to their physical appearance or sexuality rather than their skills, personality, or intellect?
How does this affect our view of women in real life?
Objectification
Who holds power in the story?
Are women given agency and the ability to make their own choices, or are they controlled by male characters or societal expectations?
Power Dynamics
The - is not just about advocating for women’s rights; it’s about challenging all forms of inequality, breaking down stereotypes, and promoting a more just society for everyone.
