lesson 3.1 Flashcards
the large supercontinent at the end of the Paleozoic Era consisting of all the land on Earth, including all seven continents and other landmasses.
Pangaea
The movement of Earth’s continents relative to each other.
Continental Drift
When Alfred Wegener was developing the theory of continental drift, the first thing he noticed was that the coastlines of the continents seemed to fit together like a jigsaw puzzle
Fault
evidence that an organism once existed in an area; can be a part of the organism’s body or a trace fossil which is a mark or print left by the organism (related word: fossilize)
Fossil
an oceanic rift zone that consists of long mountain chains with a central rift valley; divergent boundar
Mid-Ocean Ridge
crustal structure form by divergence of two tectonic plates
Ocean Trench
one of several huge pieces of Earth’s crust.
Tectonic Plate
The pieces of a puzzle fit together to form a picture. Like the pieces of a puzzle, the earth’s surface is made of large sections that fit together called tectonic plates
