Lesson 3: Statistical Infrequency- Definition of Abnormality Flashcards
Statistical in frequency definition
Statistical infrequency occurs when an individual possesses a less common characteristic than most of the population. The behaviours displayed are statistically rare, for example being extremely intelligent with an IQ score over 130.
IQ stats statistical infrequency
- 2.5% below 70 and above 130
- 95% in between
Advantages of statistical infrequency
It is just as unusual to be below average than it is to be above average
- however being above 130 is not a negative behaviour, but actually desirable
Judgements are based on objective, scientific and unbiased data that can help indicate abnormality and normality
- can indicate whether someone needs psychological help e.g. IQ below 70 can indicate mental disability
Disadvantages of statistical infrequency
It involves labelling people as abnormal
- a person with an IQ below 70 might be labelled in a negative manner by other members of society and could lower their self esteem
Subjective cut off point
- e.g. 70 is abnormal but 71 is normal? Cut off point can be questioned
