Lesson 3 - Multi-Store Model Of Memory Flashcards
What does the multi-store model of memory try and explain?
How information flows from one memory store to another
What are the three permanent structures in the memory system?
- The sensory register (SR)
- Short-term memory (STM)
- Long-term memory (LTM)
How does the Sensory Register process information?
Environmental stimuli from the senses enters the SR, which is a short duration store retaining unprocessed impressions of information
A small amount of this information is sent to be processed by the STM, but the rest is lost to decay
How does the short-term memory process information?
Information in the sensory register is acoustically coded into STM, which explains why similar sounding information can be confused
Information can be kept in STM by using ‘maintenance rehearsal’ (repeatedly verbalising or thinking about the information).
This is known as a rehearsal loop.
If there is sufficient rehearsal, or elaborative rehearsal, (where information is organised in a meaningful way) then the information may be transferred to LTM for more permanent storage
How is information retrieved from LTM?
It is retrieved by the short-term memory from the LTM and then recalled.
What can we do to prevent retrieval failure when retrieving information from the LTM?
We may need retrieval clues to access it (like the first letter of a name)
