Lesson 3: Mixtures, filtration, crystalization Flashcards
What is a mixture?
- A mixture consists of two or more elements or compounds not chemically combined together.
- Chemical properties of each substance in mixture are unchanged.
What is a solute?
A solute is what is dissolving. Eg. salt.
What is a solvent?
A solvent is what the solute is dissolving in. Eg. Water.
What is a solution?
Solvent + solute
Also known as aqeous: “dissolved in water.”
What is meant by soluble?
Soluble means can dissolve in water.
What is meant by insoluble?
Insoluble means can’t dissolve in water.
What is crytalization?
Crystalisation is a separation technique that is used to separate a soluble solid/salt from a liquid.
Eg, NaCl solution
What is filtration?
A separation technique that separates an insoluble solid from a liquid eg. sand and water.
What 3 types of mixtures can you have?
- Mixture of compounds
- Mixture of elements
- Mixture of compounds/ elements
If I add water to salt, do I change the chemical properties of the salt?
- NO!!
- The chemical properties of each
substance in the mixture are unchanged.
spec
What type of processes are filtration and crystalization known as?
- They are known as physical processes
Give an example of filtration.
AgCl + H20
What is chromotography?
- A separation technique where mixtures can be separated based on substances’ solubility.
E.g, separating soluble dyes.
