Purpose of licensing for funeral businesses and people who perform specialized roles in the funeral process:

Code of Conduct for the Embalming Room:
Restricted Admission-no one without authorization from the person in charge of the facility
Dignity of the Deceased- must be properly covered with clean linens and effort always be made to preserve dignity, verbal and physical behavior of personnel always of the highest standards of ethical conduct
Confidentiality- maintain strict confidentiality regarding any matter relating to the deceased and their condition and circumstances
Sanitation and Hygiene- observe principles of sanitation of the facility and maintain proper personal hygiene, understand proper sanitation, and understand the operation of necessary equipment to perform such sanitation techniques
Procedural Necessity- no operation should be taken in embalming and preparing the body that is not necessary to the embalming operation, excessive and invasive procedures not required for successful completion of embalming are unethical and must be considered a form of mutilation

12 hours every 3 years
3 hours reported every year = 9 hours self-directed in 3 years

Licensing requirements for a funeral home
to obtain an application must be made to the AFSRB and a fee must be paid, license must be displayed in a prominent location in FH, must be renewed annually and fee paid, must have a fixed location, must have a business owner/manager, must employ at least one LFD&E, must keep records of all contracts, must have price list, must have a room used exclusively for preparing human remains, etc. these requirements being met allows the FH to enter into funeral service contacts and provide services to the public, it will also regulate the physical requirements of the building
Licensing Renewal Requirements for a Funeral Director and Embalmer
Alberta= Single license $100, dual license $175, provide name of funeral home working with, provide name of owner/manager, pay renewal fee, submit proof of continuing education requirements, must be sure to renew every year before expiry on March 31
Penalties/Fines in Alberta
fine of $500-$100,000 or 3 times the amount obtained by the person as a result of the offence and/or imprisonment to a maximum of 2 years
Requirements to be a licensed funeral director or embalmer in Alberta
Must submit an application to the director, be sponsored by a business manager, provide a list of all locations intended to work at, pass a prescribed exam, provide a criminal record check, complete an approved training program, complete practical experience, pay the prescribed fee, the renewal fee is the same as the initial fee
offenses which may lead to suspended, revoked, or cancelled license:
failure to cooperate with the regulatory board in an investigation under the Act, supplying false information or misleading facts or circumstances to the regulatory board, failure to comply with an order under the Act or failing to cooperate with an individual enforcing an order under the Act, contravention of the Act or regulations, and failing to comply with a direction of the regulatory board
