Lesson 3 - Intervals Flashcards
Major intervals are…
Seconds, thirds, sixths, and sevenths worked out from the tonic of a major scale
Perfect intervals are…
Unisons, fourths, fifths, and octaves from the tonic of a major scale
Minor intervals are…
Intervals one chromatic semitone smaller than major
Augmented intervals are…
One chromatic semitone larger than a major or perfect interval
Diminished intervals are…
One chromatic semitone smaller than a minor or perfect interval
What is a simple interval?
Any interval up to one octave
What is a compound interval?
An interval larger than an octave
How does one name a compound interval?
Either: call it directly whatever it is, or take 7 away from the number above 8
For example, major ninth = a compound major second as 9 - 7 = 2
What are diatonic intervals?
Intervals found in a major or minor scale
What are chromatic intervals?
Intervals that are only found in chromatic scales i.e. augmented unisons, diminished octaves, augmented and diminished thirds and sixths
What is a concord?
An interval that doesn’t ‘clash’. They may be perfect: unisons, fourths, fifths, octaves, or imperfect: major and minor thirds and sixths
What are discords?
Intervals that sound as though they ‘clash’. These are: seconds, sevenths, and all augmented and diminished intervals
